MLB Pipeline August Update: Cincinnati Reds Top Prospects

    0
    Cincinnati Reds Chase Burns

It’s safe to say the analysts at MLB Pipeline REALLY liked the Cincinnati Reds 2024 MLB Draft, considering there’s 2 draftees graded higher than several from last year. This year’s MLB Pipeline update is out – let’s get into our top 5, who has some new faces. Overall, the MLB Pipeline slated the Cincinnati Reds as having 4 top 100 prospects in this update. Overall, MLB Pipeline believes the Cincinnati Reds have the 14th best farm system in baseball. We’ll take that, won’t we, after graduating over 8+ top 100s the last 3 years? Yep.

Reds #1 Prospect – RHP Chase Burns

We could’ve all predicted this, couldn’t we? MLB Pipeline slotted Chase Burns as the Reds #1 prospect. On the overall top 100 list, he comes in at #24 – which would rank him the 3rd best RHP in the pipeline, just behind Chase Dollander (why?) and Jackson Jobe. Chase won’t pitch professionally in any games this year, but the Reds, of last note, are having him stretch back out and pitch some in Arizona at the complex.

Reds #2 Prospect – RHP Rhett Lowder

This shouldn’t come as any surprise, even though he’s struggled a little bit, if you want to call it that. Rhett is on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 at 35 overall, labeling him the 5th best RHP in the pipeline. Rhett hasn’t really struggled insurmountably, but he has been hit quite a bit in AA. Still, even while being hit around, he’s sporting a 17:69 BB:K, which signals he’s throwing a ton of strikes, maybe too many, which sounds funny, but is a real thing. He was having trouble missing bats early on in Chattanooga.

Reds #3 Prospect – SS Edwin Arroyo

Edwin’s 2024 campaign was cut short due to labrum surgery, which we hope to heck he can recover completely from, but the outlets still really, really like him and so do I. I still think he was the best “prospect” to come from the Luis Castillo trade and he was showing a lot of promise in 2023. Not much to write about him here other than we hope he’s recovering well and will be back completely for 2025. He is MLB Pipeline’s 72nd overall prospect in the game, which you take considering he hasn’t played at all in 2024.

Reds #4 Prospect – IF Sal Stewart

What a year the kid is having, y’all. I don’t want to call this one a surprise at all, because it’s not, Sal is arguably the best hitter in all of the Reds organization and is proving it time and time again. Chattanooga is assuredly on the radar. Had he not been banged up the last month, he’d be there already. He’s currently slashing .279/.391/.454/.845 in Dayton with 32 extra base hits, 8 of those being homers. The only knock you can find on Sal’s game is…where will he play? He should be grabbing an outfielders glove, in my opinion, when he heads to Chattanooga shortly. Really could see him playing LF.

Reds #5 Prospect – IF Cam Collier

Cam Collier has been in and out of the top 100 list about 3 different times now, and although the first time it was warranted him not being in there, this time I’m not sure I agree with it. He’s been showing his raw power again in Dayton A+, slashing .243/.336/.416/.752 on the year now with 15 HRs and 17 2Bs while sporting a 46:110 BB:K. The issue with Cam in ’24 has been consistency – he’s been up and down a whole lot. Of late, he’s back on absolute fire. Like Sal…Cam doesn’t have a sure spot on the diamond when it comes to defense. Easy to see why he was dropped out of the top 100.

Remaining Top Prospects Per MLB Pipeline for Cincinnati

    • #6: SS Tyson Lewis – This is our first real big ‘surprise’ – I’m a bit shocked the analysts ranked him over Sammy Stafura, for example, being as Sammy has been playing pro ball already & is proving to be a force. Pipeline really likes this kid.
    • #7: C Alfredo Duno – Alfredo is by far one of the shining spots of the Reds organization right now. He was hot to start 2024 before an injury in May and has been out since, but this is a well earned ranking. He’s just 18 years old, he had a .789 OPS headed into June before injury with 3 HRs. In the FSL, that’s incredible. Doing it at 18? Even more impressive.
    • #8: RHP Chase Petty – Easily one of the biggest underperformers, Chase Petty had big expectations and has not met them. He’s been way better in Chattanooga of late, but Chase has really struggled throwing consistent strikes. His K% is still in tact, which is a great sign, but he’s carrying a 1.53 WHIP to his name right now. Not ideal. He’s still 21 though. Gotta hang in with him.
    • #9: SS Sammy Stafura – If there’s a Cincinnati Reds MiLB Player of the Year award to give out, my vote is casted for Sammy Stafura. The dude is tearing up A ball in the FSL this year, slashing .259/.376/.415/.791 with 6 HRs. The FSL is notoriously very pitcher friendly, so this is extremely bullish. He’s 19, a lot of us didn’t anticipate a first year professionally like this for him. He came in with only 45 grade power, but has proven that to be a hoax with 6 HRs already at 19 in the FSL. There’s a LOT to love about this kid.
    • #10: SS/3B Ricardo Cabrera – Ricardo is best slated here due to his raw abilities. He has 10 HR in FSL right now at 19, and has swiped 15 bags. He’s got a lot to show and a ton of talent. We’ll see how he does going forward.

    Remaining 20 Prospects

    • 11: RHP Julian Aguiar
    • 12: OF Hector Rodriguez
    • 13: RHP Luke Holman
    • 14: OF Mike Sirota
    • 15: OF Rece Hinds
    • 16: RHP Connor Phillips – Whew what a tumble
    • 17: 2B/OF Carlos Jorge
    • 18: OF Blake Dunn
    • 19: SS/OF Sheng-En Lin
    • 20: RHP Ty Floyd (Has not played, surgery)
    • 21: 2B Peyton Stovall
    • 22: LHP Tristan Smith
    • 23: RHP Zach Maxwell
    • 24: RHP Cole Schoenwetter
    • 25: OF Adolfo Sanchez
    • 26: LHP Adam Serwinowski
    • 27: RHP Lyon Richardson
    • 28: SS Naibel Mariano
    • 29: SS Leo Balcazar
    • 30: OF Kyle Henley

I think you can mark 2024 for the Cincinnati Reds farm system a little bit of a disappointment, mainly because they’re going super pitcher heavy of late in drafts & acquistions and they aren’t performing too well.

Steer Homers Twice and drives in 5 propelling the Reds past Cards 6-1

Spencer Steer - Cincinnati Reds vs St. Louis Cardinals

    Reds vs Cardinals – August 12th, 2024

After striking out in his first at bat, Steer capitalized on his 2nd time at lead off for the 2024 season & homered in consecutive at bats and drove in five runs on the night. Elly De La Cruz hit his team-leading 21st homerun putting the Cardinals to bed on Monday night.

Spencer Steer delivered a standout performance with back-to-back home runs and five RBIs, while Elly De La Cruz slugged his team-leading 21st homer, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night, all backed by a nice outing from the southpaw Andrew Abbott.

Andrew Abbott (10-9) rebounded from a recent slump, allowing just one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings to end his three-game losing streak. This marked a significant improvement for the left-hander, who had previously surrendered 12 earned runs in his last 13 1/3 innings.

Cardinals’ starter Sonny Gray (11-7) struck out nine over five innings but has yet to grab a win in three career starts against his former team. He conceded six runs on five hits, including three home runs.

Abbott deftly maneuvered through bases-loaded situations in both the second and third innings, ultimately striking out six and retiring 11 consecutive batters during one stretch.

In the third inning, Steer and De La Cruz homered on consecutive pitches from Gray, propelling Cincinnati to a 3-1 lead. This was the fifth instance this season of the Reds achieving back-to-back homers.

Steer, batting leadoff for only the third time this year and the fifth time in his career, added a three-run blast in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-1. This was Steer’s first career multi-homer game, bringing his season total to 18 home runs.

    Reds’ Spencer Steer’s 2nd HR

Cardinals’ manager Oliver Marmol was ejected in the fifth inning by plate umpire Stu Scheurwater following a dispute over a called ball. This ejection marks Marmol’s fourth of the season and the 13th of his managerial career.

Amarius Mims Out For a Few Weeks – To Miss Start Of Season

    0
Amarius Mims - Cincinnati Bengals practicing

Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Zac Taylor confirmed Monday afternoon in his press conference that OT Amarius Mims will miss several weeks “but not more than many” with a strained pec.

Adding to the list of worry about Mims…

Amarius Mims fell to the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2024 NFL Draft strictly because of his lack of availability. Most considered him the top tackle in the draft, and if minimal play on Saturday against Tampa Bay Bucaneers was worth anything, it sure looked like it. He did not register many starts in college at Georgia due to injuries, and he’ll start his professional campaign injured as well. It’s said that this pec is the same one that bothered him in college.

Cincinnati Bengals 1st round injury history

It’s not a secret: The Bengals constantly lose their 1st round picks to injury, seemingly every single year. Ja’Marr Chase is the only one in recent memory that had not spent a portion of his rookie season on the injured list *that played significant amount of time/significant role.

Well, that’s different. NASCAR & the Reds?

    0

There’s new information coming out today in regards to a “Special Series” that the Cincinnati Reds will be playing in 2025 against the Atlanta Braves. Ladies & Gentleman…START YOUR ENGINES!

    NASCAR Parntnering With the MLB

Jordan Bianchi, renowned NASCAR reporter for The Athletic, today is reporting that Major League Baseball & NASCAR have joined forces and are bringing the two most historic MLB teams together for a showcase at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN. One would figure the two teams selected for this showcase due to geographical location. Tennessee is known Reds Country paired with Braves Country. One of the Reds affiliates, Chattanooga Lookouts, is stationed southwest of Bristol and at the state of Tennessee’s bottom corner, which is labeled Braves Country by many.

    When Is This Happening?

Right now the only information we have is that it will occur in 2025’s season. The date is TBA and the location is known to be Bristol Motor Speedway. The venue has never seen something like this with Major League Baseball, so as details arise, we’ll update you on this article. It’s likely that the venue turns to the infield grass once more to build out the start of the field. Major League Baseball declined to comment, per the linked article, but is expected to announce this series on Friday of this week.

As Jordan’s article states, this isn’t the first time that a high profile sport will take over the venue: in 2016, Virginia Tech & Tennessee played a football game at the speedway, which drew a record crowd of 156,990 people. Bristol Speedway is one of NASCAR’s most historic & known venues, it has over 4.7 stars out of 5 of 9,853 reviews on Google, making it a top 3 NASCAR venue.

MLB Is Listening To Us, Finally.

For long, most baseball fans warned of the lack of “marketing” the sport was putting out. Now, in 2025, they’ll have plenty of reason to tone the complaints – two of the game’s most exciting super stars will face off in Bristol, Tennessee: the Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuna Jr, and the Cincinnati Reds’ Elly De La Cruz. Let’s go! Start those Engines!

The Cincinnati Reds are set to face the Atlanta Braves 6 times next season. There’s a series in Atlanta May 5-8, and the Braves will then come to Cincinnati in August on August 1-3. Make sure you clear your schedules, and see you there?

Guess Who’s Back? 2x Gold Glovin’ catcher.

    0

According to Jon Heyman today on X, the Cincinnati Reds have signed old friend Tucker Barnhart to a minor league deal. Your girlfriend’s favorite player in 2017 and the fan favorite is back in Cincinnati on a MiLB deal.

    Cincinnati Reds C Tucker Barnhart

Tucker Barnhart was recently DFA’d by the Arizona Diamondbacks, whom signed him to a MLB deal earlier in the offseason. He went unclaimed, didn’t play since, and is now landing himself back closer to home (Indianapolis) to familiar ground, Cincinnati, OH.

As a Reds fan, this is very much welcomed, because our catcher depth isn’t the greatest, and we’ve had spurs of injuries from Luke Maile, making Nick Krall tap into some of ’em. Austin Wynns is out for the year. Eric Yang has no MLB pedigree. Now, the Reds will add our old friend back to the system.

    Tucker’s 2024

It hasn’t been much to write home about, that’s for sure, hence why the Reds were able to get him back on a minor league deal. He hasn’t been the same defensively since he left, and this year is no exception. He’s worth -2 FRV, his pop time is a little slower, his framing has been amongst the worst in the league, & offensively? Let’s not talk about it, mate. Yikes. But still, it’s an MiLB deal, and it’s fun! Welcome back, Tuck!

The Cincinnati Reds Were Attempting To Land A Big Fish In ’24 MLB Trade Deadline

    0
    trevor rogers

The lot of us can agree: The Cincinnati Reds 2024 MLB Trade Deadline was about as puzzling, aggravating, and *enter negative adjective here* as there could’ve been. We didn’t get better for 2024, and we…didn’t get better for 2025 either. Today we learned some pretty interesting stuff, thanks to the ‘ole X application and a Miami Marlins Beat Reporter, Craig Mish.

    The Big Fish

There wasn’t a whole lot of ‘big fish’ moving this trade deadline, but that sure as heck didn’t mean the Cincinnati Reds didn’t try to land one. According to Craig Mish, the Reds were in on one of the Miami Marlins biggest trade assets – LHP SP Trevor Rogers. The market for starting pitching wasn’t near as hot as it was in years prior, with most teams starting to realize they had to capitalize on in-house development of arms, considering the way the market has gone, but the Marlins ended up getting a pretty significant package for theirs. The Baltimore Orioles ponied up & paid the Marlins INF Connor Norby (O’s #5 prospect) and OF Kyle Stowers (former top O’s prospect, graduated).

How Did The Reds Miss Out?

According to Craig Mish, the Cincinnati Reds offered ‘one of their top pitching prospects’ – whom, however, was not named. One would assume it would’ve had to of been RHP Chase Petty, though, of course, that’s nothing but an assumption. Considering the capital the Marlins got back, that assumption fits quite well, as Chase Petty is also the Reds’ 5th overall prospect. A very trustworthy source I speak with had mentioned the Reds have attempted to land several Marlins pitchers dating all the way back to last offseason, but the Marlins have stayed consistent with their reluctance to deal them up until now.

It’s cited numerous places & confirmed through that same source cited above that the ole Redlegs reached out to Miami in the Winter as well in regards to Trevor Rogers (And, raise you one better, several other of their starters) – but they (Reds) were unwilling to depart with more than just Chase Petty and what’s explained as ‘a lower level international prospect’ for Trevor Rogers both times. The Marlins decided they wanted Norby and Stowers more, and I believe that is a smart choice.

Four of the top five of Miami’s prospects are pitchers now after the acquistion from the Padres. They do not have a shortage of arms, so leading with Chase Petty (assumedly) makes sense why the Reds were not winners this go around on the bidding. It was a bad time to attempt to buy, several of our top bats are injured (Arroyo, Stewart) but I applaud Krall’s team for trying.

The Cincinnati Reds Trade RP Lucas Sims for RHP Ovis Portes

    0

It’s MLB Trade Deadline Day. The Cincinnati Reds have been very busy working the phones. They’ve already traded their biggest acquistion of the 2023-24 free agency RHP Frankie Montas to a division rival, now they’re trading one of their better bullpen arms, Lucas Sims, as well.

    The Return

In this deal, the Cincinnati Reds got back 19 year old Ovis Portes, a right handed pitching prospect. According to Sox Prospects, Ovis is very tall, throws from 3 quarters arm slot with a lot of speed generated from his release point. His fastball sits at 95-98 and can hit triple digits with more strength. Very easy velocity. He also has a changeup and slider, his changeup is still under construction.

So far in 2024, he’s pitched at FCL (Rookie League) and he was promoted to A ball where he’s made 5 starts so far and has a 3.43 ERA with 15 walks & 25 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. Ovis is definitely a project arm, one that likely will end up in the bullpen throwing easy heat. He will report to the Cincinnati Reds’ A ball affiliate Daytona Tortugas.

Bio: Ovis was born in St. Johns, Antigua/Barbuda and is 6’4″ 170 lbs and is 19 years old. He is the first professional baseball player to sign from Antigua and Barbuda. Source Soxprospects.com – He signed for $25,000

    Found some video on him:

    Lucas Sims Departs

Lucas Sims had a very up and down career with the Cincinnati Reds. One month he could locate his stuff, the next he couldn’t. I’m sure a lot of Reds fans are happy he’s gone. Me? I think I am. He’s a good dude, but 5.0 walks per 9 speak for itself. It was exhausting watching David Bell trot him out there in crucial spots for him to collapse. Best of luck in Boston, Lucas.

The Reds Trade a Division Rival

    0

It’s trade deadline day, and we can expect several more Reds moves, we could imagine. Last night, right before the game against the Chicago Cubs completed, Mark Feisand of MLB.com reported the Cincinnati Reds were in agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers to trade RHP SP Frankie Montas to Wisconsin. We were a little surprised, all of us, to see what the Reds got back for a guy who, let’s face it, was not very good for us & expiring/expensive, so we’re rather happy with this, even though we hate Milwaukee.

Frankie Montas Is Headed To Milwaukee

The Frankie Montas era has completed in Cincinnati (for 2024, at least.) He ended his Reds tenure with a 5.01 ERA, 4.91 FIP, 85 ERA+, & averaged 9 hits per 9 innings, 4 walks per 9, and only 7.5 Ks per 9. He had a 41:78 BB:K, gave up 14 homers in 93.1 innings pitched. He was healthy for the most part, but he’ll tell you himself: it was a disappointing go at it in 2024. So what did we end up getting back for him? We got a few familiar faces.

OF Joey Wiemer – Cincinnati Bearcat

If you started watching the Cincinnati Reds in 2023, you remember this guy well. If he wasn’t hitting an absolute bomb that put a dagger in our gut in ’23, he was robbing Elly De La Cruz of a homer that ended up saving them (Brewers) the game. This one comes as bit of a surprise, even though it’s known if you’re trading in division, it better be a haul. Considering Montas only signed a 1 year deal with a mutual option for ’25, this is impressive getting a former top 100 prospect in Joey Wiemer who won’t be a Free Agent until 2029.

It was just reported by Charlie Goldsmith that as of right now, Joey Wiemer will report to AAA Louisville Bats to start off his Reds tenure. Joey Wiemer is known for his speed, arm, & his defensive abilities in the outfield. He also has some big time strength and hit 13 HRs in 2023 in the big leagues. He had 32 extra base hits last year for the Brewers in 336 plate appearances. We can call it what it is: a reclamation project for a guy that was ranked as high as baseball’s 75th best prospect. Joey has been tremendous in July in AAA for Nashville slashing .333/.494/.517 with 7 XBHs (2 HRs, 5 2B) and totaling 20 hits. I don’t think it’ll be long before the Reds swallow their pride, DFA Austin Slater, and give Joey Wiemer some playing time in Cincinnati.

    Jakob Junis – RHP RP

In the deal, the Reds also got RHP Jakob Junis, whom has been very good for the Milwaukee Brewers pitching lab as well in a swing man role. Jakob has a mutual option year in 2026 for $8,000,000 which the Reds may act on should they lose Martinez in FA (if they don’t trade him). Junis has 5 pitches, but primarily uses offspeed pitches – check below for his usage chart.

Cincinnati Reds RHP Jakob Junis usage chart

    Cincinnati Reds Rece Hinds

Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta Braves – July 23, 2024 – Your Cincinnati Reds showed again coming out of the All-Star break how much they play down to lesser competition and show up against good teams. How does a team that swept the Dodgers and Yankees get swept by the Tigers and Nationals? A streaky lineup is how. This rotation and bullpen has been sublime, but the bats are far too inconsistent. Can the Reds build on last night’s performance?

    Cincinnati Reds RHP Nick Martinez

    Cincinnati Reds RHP Nick Martinez.
    Cincinnati Reds RHP Nick Martinez.

When Nick Martinez starts a game, it falls apart in the third inning. It’s actually incredible how consistently bad he is as a starter against his appearances in relief. As a starter, Martinez’s ERA in the third inning is over 10. As a reliever, his overall ERA is sub 3.50. Looking at his stats as a whole is somewhat encouraging. He owns an overall ERA of 3.88. He ranks in the 98th percentile in Chase % with 36.7% and the 98th percentile in BB % with just 3.0%.

Control is not an issue. His arsenal is the issue. His fastball is phenomenal with 0 HRs and a BAA of just .200. Yet on his cutter and curveball, he’s given up 10 XBHs (3 HRs). His changeup has also been smacked for 3 HRs. He’s hittable if you get to see him twice and that’s why we start to see his ERA skyrocket in the third and fourth inning of his appearances. By the way, in the first inning, his ERA is only 1.69 and in the second it’s 0.00. You just don’t want to see him pitching that early because he’s bound to get rocked.

    8RF Rece Hinds.353

Nice to see Rece Hinds again mainly because of the intrigue and the hope that he still has some magic. He’s been swinging at everything so let’s hope he can barrel a fastball. The Reds will have a tough time against Chris Sale tonight. Candelario gets a day off which makes sense against Sale. Jonathan India has been getting on base so well recently that I still expect some runs, but they may need a lot of them with Martinez on the mound tonight.

    Atlanta Braves LHP Chris Sale

    Atlanta Braves LHP Chris Sale.

Sale has been one of the best starting pitchers in the majors for a long time… and still is. Owning a 13-3 record with a 2.70 ERA, Sale is no joke. Seriously, take a look at his statcast and your jaw will drop. The dude is in the 90th percentile or better in Pitching Run Value (22!), Breaking Run Value (1st in majors), Offspeed Run Value, xERA, Avg Exit Velo, Chase %, K %, and Hard Hit %. And then he’s in the 80th percentile of better for literally everything else except Velo, Extension, and Fastball Run Value. Not much to say other than you have to catch this guy on an off day or have your best guy on the mound against him.

Nacho Alvarez Jr. makes his second appearance on his career still in search of his first hit. Zack Short makes an appearance with Ozzie Albies going to the IL yesterday and Austin Riley hitting the paternity list this morning. On paper, looking at averages, this lineup isn’t scary – doesn’t really look much different from the Reds lineup to be honest. Ozuna is a factor more often than not and Olson is having a down year. With Chris Sale on the mound, 2 runs might be all this lineup needs to beat the Reds.
