    Bengals Sign QB Desmond Ridder

    Desmond Ridder was a surprise pick by the Atlanta Falcons early on in the 2022 NFL Draft. He started in 4 games that year, and ended up being named their starter for 2023 before an up and down year and ultimately being replaced. Throughout, he also dealt with a coaching change. He ended up in Las Vegas as a Raider and started one game last season.

    He’s not expected to make the Bengals team, but as mentioned, he’ll get each chance to. A lot of us have a homegrown appreciation for Desmond and we’re all certainly rooting for him to become the Bengals backup behind Joe Burrow, but when it comes to it, Jake Browning is much better of a fit to backup Joe in this Bengals’ system. Of course, this is assuming the Bengals end up utilizing Jake in that role.

    Logan Woodside has served as the Bengals QB3 in recent years getting time on the practice squad, now Desmond Ridder will be competing for that spot. I’m sure he’s excited and very motivated to fill that spot. Zac Taylor was the one that offered Ridder the scholarship offer to Cincinnati, and now he’s the one bringing Ridder to his professional team, Cincinnati Bengals. It’s a cool story.

    The Bengals are still navigating some issues with personnel – the defense hasn’t been upgraded, Trey Hendrickson is still not signed and stating he won’t play – there’s a lot the team has to figure out and preseason starts in less than 3 weeks. WHOA.

    1st round pick, 9th overall: SS Steele Hall

    The Reds started their draft off with Steele Hall, some of which not many had mocked to the Reds at all. I think most of us felt they’d go Billy Carlson over Hall, and Steele even alluded to that same idea; he was a little surprised the Reds grabbed him there, as they didn’t do as much scouting or meeting with Steele as they did others, but that speaks for itself – the Reds really wanted him.

    Some may be led to believe taking Steele out of the blue had something to do with their other picks, (me, guys, that some is me) but hear me out…he ended up signing for more than $750,000 under slot. That ends up being a significant win for the Reds, especially since they took some pretty sure-fire collegiate goers like Eli Pitts, and more.

    The official number for Steele Hall: $5,750,000 Slot value: $6,513,800 | $763,800 UNDER

    3rd round pick, 83rd overall pick: RHP Mason Morris

    As they usually do in the Joe Katuska era, the Reds selected another college arm with high upside in their 3rd round pick. He signed for $897,500 and the 83rd overall pick slot was at $964,800 so the Reds once again saved about $67k with this selection.

    Mason Morris has some of the most electric stuff in the best league in collegiate baseball, his fastball touches 99 MPH, he has a wicked cutter, a polished slider, and he was rumored to be working on an additional changeup to ramp up as a starter in professional ball. Mason may end up being one of my favorite picks this draft.

    Burns, Baby, Burns – Reds To Call Up Chase Burns

    It’s time for Chase Burns. 

    Sources have informed MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo that the Reds are, indeed, calling up their number-two draft pick from 2024 and that he will be making his first MLB start against the New York Yankees on Tuesday. Those in attendance at Great American Ballpark will be privileged to watch one of the best young pitchers in the MiLB ranks take the mound against the Bronx Bombers. 

    Since being drafted, Burns has only a 1.77 ERA in 13 total starts, with a 7-3 record. Since being called up to Louisville, he’s started two games and posted a 2.19 ERA in those. Burns has an impressive 89 strikeouts in just 66 innings pitched, and yet has only walked 13 batters. His stuff is electric and his command solid.

    With starters Hunter Greene and Wade Miley out with injuries, the time appears to be right for Burns to make his debut. But that debut will come against baseball’s fourth toughest offense. New York has scored 391 runs in 76 games and have 260 extra base hits. If any young pitcher is ready to be thrown into the deep end, though, it’s Burns. 

    The Reds will kick off their three game series against the Yankees on Monday after wrapping up their quick road trip in St. Louis. Even with the injuries to their starters, the Reds rotation has been relatively solid. Their starters are 27-26 with a 3.76 ERA, above league average. Their 42 percent quality start rate is good for ninth in the league. 

    Adding Burns to such a potent rotation is an excellent and exciting move. It’s been a while since such a highly touted pitching prospect came up through the Reds organization so fast. It’s up to Burns to prove the hype is real, and help this team remain above .500 against one of the top teams in the league.

    Cam was a first round selection by the Cincinnati Reds in 2022 at 18th overall and has represented the Reds at the MLB Future’s game where he was MVP honors hitting a homerun.

    Cincinnati Reds Cameron Collier

    After hurting himself in spring training, Cam went on the IL, had to get surgery, but has come back hot. He’s 20 years old now and in 74 ABs in 2025, is slashing .338/.443/.514/.957 (OPS). He has had stops at the rookie complex where he was way better than the competition, and then recently played 11 games in Dayton. The stay there is short, as evidenced. He only logged 41 ABs there slashing .293/.370/.417/.785 and that was enough for Jeremy Farrell to send him up to Chattanooga.

    Postgame: Andrew Abbott Blanks Guardians 6/10/25

    It took a lot of defense, but the Reds have won their fifth straight game. Along with those defensive gems was some great pitching by Andrew Abbott.     Abbott Spins a Gem

    The night started off slow for the Reds’ offense, but not for starting pitcher Andrew Abbott. Coming into Tuesday night, the Guardians were 4-12 this season against left-handed pitching. Those woes continued as Abbott threw a complete game shutout on 110 pitches. He scattered three hits, walked one, and struck out five during his first professional complete game. Abbott’s very strong start also marks the first time since Wade Miley‘s no-hitter in 2020 that a Red has thrown a complete game.

    The offense was slow tonight, but a timely base hit by Spencer Steer in the fifth scored the only run of the game. That run was all Andrew Abbott needed to brace his fantastic start. After tonight, Abbott’s era has fallen to 1.87 on the season, as he’s been phenomenal. This also marks the Reds’ fifth win in a row, giving them a chance for back-to-back series sweeps Wednesday afternoon.

    Going Forward

    The Reds will need these kind of dominant starts with Hunter Greene out for an extended period. Miley was solid in the first game, and Andrew Abbott twirled his best start as a pro in game two. On Wednesday, Nick Lodolo will take the mound as the Reds look to extend their winning streak to six games. Coincidentally, a win on Wednesday will mark their sixth consecutive victory against Cleveland, their longest against the Guardians ever. As the Reds descend into their toughest part of the schedule, they are starting to get hot at the right time.

    Hunter Greene – Grade 1 groin strain/back

    Let’s start with our bad news…Hunter Greene has spent time on the IL several times this year already due to his groin. Now, he’s back on the IL after facing the Brewers last week with the same injury. Jim Day butted in on Sunday’s broadcast saying that the team believes it may be even worse than originally anticipated. He was complaining about back issues on top of the groin issues, which has sparked question in when he’ll truly be back.

    Now…he’s currently in Los Angeles seeking a second opinion on his back. Anytime there’s a second opinion, I get terrified. You should be terrified, too, but I refuse to be too pessimistic when it comes to Hunter Greene because he’s proven us all wrong so many times and continues to do so. There’s absolutely no information as to what the 2nd opinion is for, other than his ‘back and groin injury’ so it could mean surgery needed, it could mean simply…a second opinion. I’m nervous.

    Guesstimation of when he’ll be back: Mid-July, given his back is inflamed from the groin issue and there’s not another significant injury undisclosed. IF the latter, he’ll likely be out for the season if surgery on a disc/back is needed.

    Austin Hays is our good news. Although he’s been on the IL several times as well, Hays has statistically been one of the best Reds position players being worth 1.3 bWAR with a 141 OPS+ in only 119 ABs; you can tell he’s extremely important to the wellbeing of this Cincinnati Reds team. Luckily this past IL stint was nothing but a foot contusion, some of which, per Gordon Wittenmeyer, he’s already ready to get back to the team.

    There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Santiago Espinal playing for the Reds. I feel pretty confident that there’s a team out there that’d part with a decent prospect to add him to their team even. And now to the issue…the actual issue.     The Lineup

    Any team out there worth a darn is utilizing their best hitter in the 2 hole. The Cincinnati Reds aren’t. Now, to be fair, the Reds were banking on Matt McLain to come back and be a force, and he just simply hasn’t. It pains me to cite his prepostorous 65 wRC+. Yes, 65. So far below average it’s painful to read. In comes…SANTIAGO ESPINAL!

    The Santiago Espinal usage in the 2 spot is actually my reason for being half out on the Cincinnati Reds for the remainder of the Tito Francona era. It’s seriously so inexcusable. Santiago is slashing a mere .273/.333/.658 with an 85 wRC+ and even though the average is…okay…the methodology isn’t. If you dig even deeper under the hood it gets worse, especially when you acknowledge the fact that Santiago Espinal has hit 2nd against RHP way too frequently.

    Right Handed Pitching Woes

    Espinal has taken 103 PAs so far against a RHP starter, mainly in the 2 hole, and he’s slashing .240/.296/.536 (OPS) against them. IN THE 2 HOLE. Now, his K% is extremely low so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, but the data is there – he is not good against RHP and he never has been. In total, in 2025, he’s taken 108 ABs against RHP slashing .240/.296/.240/.536, that’s good for a 56 wRC+. Not someone you want in the 2 hole to say the least in any capacity against them.

    Now…LHP is a totally different story. Santiago Espinal has proven to be able to hit them and hit them well. He’s slashing .333/.400/.481/.881 against LHP in 60 PAs which is great, especially his 138 wRC+ against them.

    Boomer Tendencies

    Nevermind Santiago Espinal in the 2 hole, the manager, Terry Francona, whom we were all excited for, has yet to prove he is going to manage with both the data and the feel. On numerous occasions he’s let the wrong hand go to bat late into games, and maybe there’s no proof of it causing a loss, but there’s certainly correlation and that leads to causation.

    We need to see some change in managerial tendencies from him going forward; the data is your friend, he can’t keep ignoring it. Once Noelvi Marte, Christian Encarnacion-Strand are back, it’s likely Santiago’s usage goes down a bit…or is it? Like Tony La Russa did with the White Sox, Terry Francona is starting to show a loyalty line to those who ‘show up every day with a good attitude’ instead of the better, younger talent. That’s an issue, and there’s been more issues that I haven’t gone into on this article. Fix it, Terry, it’s 2025 and you’re no longer retired. Fix it.

    Pete Rose’s MLB Ban Lifted

    MLB’s All Time Hits leader and Cincinnati Reds Icon Pete Rose had his permanent ban lifted today, 5/13/2025 on “513 Day” in Cincinnati. The icon now has the chance to be inducted into the Hall of Fame where he belongs. Subscribe to our Newsletter for more!

    Finally, A Chance…

    There was 2 huge things that had to be done before Peter Edward Rose could be eligible for the Hall of Fame…one was he had to be removed from the banned list. That is now complete. The next, he has to be added to the HOF ballot. That’s to come, and it will take another battle from his family & friends. There is a committee that votes on eligibility, they don’t meet until December of 2027. That said, Pete won’t appear on the ballot for at LEAST another 2 years. He will have to have 10 of 16 votes to be considered as well.

    If you read the long list of accolades for Pete Rose, you know there’s no one more deserving for the MLB Hall of Fame. His hit record will genuinely never be beat, and there’s no one that will ever even come close to it.

    Change of Heart from Rob Manfred

    Rob Manfred freed several players and even an owner today with his letter; one being shoeless Joe Jackson, another MLB legend that was held back from the HOF due to blasphemy. He wrote that, “If you are no longer with us (deceased) you are not a threat to the integrity of baseball.” Take it how you will, if you’re a Reds fan, you should be excited, one of our franchise’s icons has a chance at the Hall again. It’s a damn shame they waited until he perished, but we all knew it’d come after.
