    The Boys Are Back!

    0

The Reds just won’t stop hitting! In today’s Cincinnati Reds spring training game the Reds won 9-4! Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, and CES all hit a home run to lead the team to the win!

    Elly is Locked In!

De La Cruz once again hit a home run! This one being from the left side of the plate and his third of the spring already! De La Cruz went 2-3 on the day with an RBI double in the first and the HR coming in the fifth inning. De La Cruz has come out firing this spring and shows no signs of slowing down. This could be due to him switching his swing up in the offseason a tad, which so far seems to be working! Below you can watch his HR from today, his third home run of the spring:

    Matt McLain is Back!

After missing out on a full season last year, McLain is back and healthy! Following a 1-3 game yesterday where he recorded an RBI single (with the highest exit velocity of his career at 112 MPH!), McLain had a 3-3 game today with a leadoff double in the first, another double in the third, and a two run homer in the fifth! McLain is reminding everyone why he is the starting second baseman and absolutely vital to this Reds team. You can watch McLain’s HR below:

    Healthy CES on a Mission

CES launched his first home run of the spring today with an absolute shot to left field! Strand, who dealt with a broken wrist for the first few months of the season, is back and healthy. After fully recovering from surgery Strand is looking to have a nice season and be a big power bat the Reds need! A healthy Strand would be huge for the Reds as he fills the first base spot and could very easily slug 25+ HRs this season. You can watch Strand’s HR below as well:

Can They Keep This Momentum Going?

With 29 days to go till Opening Day the Reds are looking to keep this going! The Reds could be a very scary team if their offense keeps playing like this combined with this rotation. Especially with Tito running the show. Other teams better watch out this season! Here’s hoping to seeing a lot more of what we saw today! Go Reds!

    Have a Day Austin Hays!

    0

Austin Hays made his name known throughout Reds country today! Hays had a stellar day at the plate going 3-3 with two home runs, a double, and 6 RBIs leading the Reds to an 8-1 victory over the reigning champs, the Los Angeles Dodgers!

You can watch both of his home runs below:

In case you are not too impressed thinking this came off of minor leaguers getting their first chance in Spring Training, don’t worry! All three of Austin Hays’ hits came off of starters for the Dodgers. Hays’ first hit was a double off of RHP Tyler Glasnow, who is in the starting rotation for the Dodgers. Hays’ first home run was a two run homer off of Dodgers new reliever Tanner Scott, who will be a top of the line reliever for them. The final hit, which was Hays’ second home run, was another 2 run shot off of veteran Blake Treinen.

A Sign of What’s to Come?

Could this be a sign of what Hays is bringing to the table as a Red? We certainly hope so. Hays, who was a former all star before missing almost all of last season due to a kidney injury, could very easily return to all star form and be the every day outfielder the Reds need. If Hays returns to form and plays like an all star, he could contribute a lot to this young Reds team. After today I, for one, am looking forward to seeing more!

Elly De La Cruz Off to a Hot Start

    0

Elly De La Cruz hit the ground running today! Beginning his 2025 campaign today with not one but TWO Home Runs, one from each side of the plate!

You can watch his second home run below:

De La Cruz looked very sharp in his two plate appearances today. His First AB he hit a 2-2 curveball that hung right over the middle of the plate out to Right Center field off of Cleveland pitcher Triston McKenzie. His second trip up to the plate he was batting from the right side of the plate. This time he belted a fastball off of LHP Logan Allen to center field for a 409 ft home run with an exit velo of 109 MPH!

Elly Primed for a 30-30 Season?

With this strong offensive performance right out the gate, is this an exciting sign of things to come for Elly De La Cruz in the upcoming 2025 season? This could definitely be true with Elly and his elite speed – the 30 SB will be easy for him. The home runs will definitely be more of a challenge, but I believe he can take that next step and gets 30+ HRs. If Elly achieves this, we could be looking at an MVP season for number 44! Only time will tell but De La Cruz is already giving us fans lots of hope for a good season!

Reds Baseball is Back (Spring Training Edition)

Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about all of the breaking Cincinnati sports news!

It may be frigid here in Cincinnati, but it’s nice and warm in Goodyear, Arizona. That’s where your Reds will take the to the diamond today (or at least some of them will) for the team’s first spring training action. It’s a split squad contest for the Reds. One unit will take on the Cleveland Guardians in Goodyear at 3:05 PM. The second faces off against the Brewers at 3:10.

This iteration of spring training is packed full of hope and anticipation. That’s what you get when you bring in a manager with the chops that Terry Francona has to his name. He’s a two time World Series champion and three time manager of the year. Beyond that he’s prove to be one of baseball’s keenest minds from a managerial standpoint. And he’s done it on some of the biggest stages in baseball.

Cincinnati has a bevy of young talent. They’ve made some solid signings and trades. And the combination of those moves with acquired such a seasoned manager has plenty of folks buying into what this team can do.

Some of the most interesting storylines to watch this spring include the return of several players from injury. After suffering ligament damage from being hit by a pitch and missing nearly all of last year, Christian Encarnacion Strand is on the comeback trail. He played in eight games in the Arizona Fall League and looked very good. The Reds’ infield is crowded at the moment so it will be interesting to see both where CES plays in the spring and how his approach at the plate looks after missing so much time.

Matt McLain is another promising young Red who is looking to bounce back from injury. His torn labrum caused him to miss all of 2024 after hitting .290 with 16 home runs in 2023. McLain is a mainstay at second base, and this spring should be a great test to see how he’s responding. He also saw time in the fall league, playing in 13 games.

Noelvi Marte’s first full season since his suspension for use of PED’s should be an interesting one. After his suspension last year  he hit just .210 and posted a -1.8 bWAR. Marte’s solid numbers in 2023 (.316/.366/.456) are therefore somewhat under a cloud. But he is yet another player that should take complete advantage of every spring training at bat that he gets.

The final thing to watch this spring is, of course, Cincinnati’s pitching staff. A eye opening 16 different pitchers started a game for the Reds last year. Some of that was due to injuries and bullpen days. But so many different pitchers were hurt at varying times that cataloging it all is a depressing and thankless task.

The front office clearly understands how quickly a rotation and bullpen could implode due to injuries. They’ve taken steps to sign as many pitchers as possible, given their financial situation. And given the injuries to Nick Lodolo and Hunter Greene, among others, Francona will likely be watching their workload very closely.

Hope springs eternal in this town when it comes to the Reds. The pundits and projections have them finishing all over the map, from last to even winning the division. But when that first pitch hurtles towards home plate later today, all that goes out the window. Because baseball will be back!

Bengals Look Likely To Franchise Tag Tee Higgins For Second Year In A Row

Subscribe to our newsletter below or using the pop up if you haven’t already and we’ll make sure you’re informed and updated!

This is perhaps the most impactful offseason of the Joe Burrow era in Cincinnati. The way the front office navigates the signing of Higgins, Chase, and Hendrickson has a chance to define this franchise for years to come. The decisions they make this summer are extremely difficult, no question. But that is why these executives get paid the big bucks.

According to James Rapien Cincinnati is preparing to use the franchise tag on Tee Higgins for the second straight season. That would put his salary at about $26.18 million. This would be towards the top of the wide receiver contract range. As a comparison, Terry McLaurin’s cap hit is $25.5 million for the Commanders.

But most Bengals pundits are forecasting that this move isn’t the end for Higgins’ negotiations. This time around, the situation in tagging him is much different. For one, Joe Burrow has been extremely vocal in his desire to keep the core of Higgins, Hendrickson and Chase together. And as a team you ignore the wishes of your franchise quarterback at your own peril. If Burrow wants someone like Tee Higgins on this team, Cincinnati must do all it can (within reason) to do it.

Potentially applying the franchise tag gives the Bengals something extremely important: time. Time to negotiate with Tee to potentially come to an agreement on a long term deal is extremely important. And having the tag in place, as opposed to letting him walk as a free agent, helps in that respect. Bear in mind, as Rapien points out, that this is a non-exclusive franchise tag. This means that “a team could negotiate a long-term deal with Higgins, but it would cost them two first round picks if the Bengals didn’t match the contract.”

Once again, this gives Cincinnati an added layer of compensation if they can’t reach a deal or choose not to match a ridiculous offer made by a competitor. Getting those picks (as opposed to nothing if Tee simply walked as a free agent) would be a far better outcome than the alternative. This isn’t the Bengals being lazy or giving up on contract talks. Rather it’s an important and strategic first step in an important process.

But the most crucial thing to note is that if the tag is applied, it is a signal that the clock is ticking. Cincinnati must act in good faith with Higgins and his agent. They simply cannot afford to lowball him or drag out these talks to gain some sort of phantom advantage. The time for games is over as time is of the essence. Yes, it’s important to make a deal that doesn’t cripple this team moving forward. But it is also far past the time to pinch pennies. It’s time to go all in for Burrow and for the future.

This team has an unfortunate history of misfiring it comes to contract negotiations. Put simply, now is not the time for such foolishness. Every mistake, every miscalculation, is amplified and we cannot afford it.

As others have calculated, there is no excuse for this team’s front office to cry poor and claim they “can’t pay everyone.” Whether it’s releasing players or restructuring contracts, there is plenty that can be done to keep the Big Three in Cincinnati. What’s more, the Bengals can do it without hamstringing this team for the future. It remains to be seen, though, if the Bengals have the gumption to pull the trigger and go for broke (no pun intended).

Yes, Higgins has health concerns. He’s missed games, but when he has been on the field his impact cannot be denied. His physicality, ability to catch tough passes, all while still being able to stretch a defense are exactly the qualities that Burrow covets. And they are the same skills that make he and Ja’Marr Chase such a deadly combination.

It’s time for this deal to be done. It can be the first domino to fall. And after it happens we can clear the way to what we all hope to be other impactful signings that get the Cincinnati Bengals back on track to the playoffs and beyond.

Nick Lodolo Poised For A Bounceback, Healthy Year

    0
    Nick Lodolo Cincinnati Reds

Nick Lodolo has perhaps been one of the most disappointing Cincinnati Reds players that we’ve had, something about the name “Nick,” perhaps. Mainly due to lack of availability, definitely not lack of talent. In 2024, Nick Lodolo did make 21 starts. The Reds need more out of him, and that’s why…well, let’s get into it. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter using the popup or form below. We’d LOVE to be the one providing you the news.

He was a hot topic in trade discussions, until…

Nick Lodolo was being sought by numerous teams, one being the Texas Rangers. The Cincinnati Reds discussed numerous packages with Chris Young aka Texas Rangers Pres of Ops/active GM, most taking place at MLB Winter Meetings. They discussed a duo of scenarios, one sending Lodolo to the Rangers for Josh Jung and conditionally receiving Jon Gray as well to fit the rotational need.

Nick Krall and Brad Meador also discussed acquiring Josh Smith from the Texas Rangers some of which would’ve been a similar deal including Nick Lodolo. Obviously, these deals never took shape, and Nick Lodolo is still with the Cincinnati Reds, and for good reason. It’s also known that the Phillies asked for Lodolo in a trade for Alec Bohm, that, like the Rangers deals, went nowhere. All of these took place with the impression of exploring a Steer trade, as well, and the Reds ended up not going through with that…wisely.

Reasons to be bullish on Lodolo in ’25

Nick Lodolo, as mentioned above, was in several trade scenarios, and the Cincinnati Reds’ brass were very open with other teams inquiring that they would be inclined to deal him for the right package…but then, Nick showed up. Not only did he show up, he showed up way stronger; he had a great offseason in the gym.

He was hitting personal records on deadlift, which might not sound too “WhOa, ReALLy DuDe?” but it’s important because he dealt with calf & groin strains that kept him sidelined the majority of the time again in 2024. What put him out toward the end of the season was a finger blister, & a left middle finger strain some of which is said to be under control now. With some added strength, we think there’s plenty of reason to label Lodolo more durable this season as he enters his 4th season in the big leagues.

In an article with Pat Brennan in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Terry Francona said, “He’s worked hard this winter.” “He had a good offseason because he could actually do some stuff that he couldn’t do before. So, I think that’s going to help him get deeper in games, his stamina. Hopefully it keeps him healthy because if he stays on the mound he’s going to be exciting.”

Nick, himself, also mentions in that same article, when asked where he feels the best at: “Core. Legs. Arms. Truly everywhere,” Lodolo said. “Last year when I came into camp, it was kind of like we were questioning a lot of things (physically) still at that point, so this year it was good to get a full offseason. I got a lot stronger − by far the strongest I’ve ever been in my career. I’ve put myself in a better spot to be more durable, which was my big thing. So, I’m excited about that. I feel like I’m in a great spot.”

    Fantasy Values In ’25

Everything states that Nick Lodolo is ready to have a comeback 2025, and if you ask us, he’s poised to be a late round grab in your fantasy leagues. As we all know, his K% stayed relevant in 2024, though he had a pretty relative disappointing season, and now add some more health and strength, he’s a safe bet to throw in your lineups. He isn’t bringing any new pitches to the ballpark for 2025, but he still has all the talent in the world, he just needs one thing – Availability.

THE BENGALS’ GERMAINE PRATT REQUESTS TRADE

    0

In what most everyone agrees will be a crucial offseason for the Bengals, things are already moving fast. On Wednesday, Germaine Pratt requested a trade from the team. While the reasons weren’t specifically announced, it’s not hard to imagine why Pratt might seek a change of scenery.

Though Pratt was a team captain and the Bengals leader in tackles last year, it didn’t translate into much success for this team. They were 25th in the league in yards and points allowed. It lead to the firing of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. There has been a lot of discussion about how close Pratt was to Anarumo and how that may have played a role in his trade request.

For all of the defenses faults last year, Pratt ranked top 10 in tackles last season and was one of only three players with 140 or more tackles and six or more turnover plays.

Despite the numbers, Pratt’s name has also come up as a likely candidate to be cut. This was because he “allowed 460 yards after the catch, according to PFF, tied for the second most among NFL linebackers. He led the Bengals in missed tackles (20), but more importantly, his missed tackle rate was a major issue. Pratt ranked 26th of the 32 linebackers with at least 75 tackles in missed tackle rate (12.7 percent).” Thus, amassing tackles, after the way this defense performed, isn’t necessarily indicative of a productive player.

If the Bengals do decide to cut him, it would result in a $2.3 million dead-money hit. But conversely, it would also clear up an additional $5.8 million in cap space. That is cap space Cincinnati may desperately need as it looks to work out contracts with Tee Higgins, Ja’Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson.

With the arrival of Al Golden as the new man at the helm of the Bengals defense, perhaps the time is right for both sides to move on. Perhaps Cincinnati can flip some draft picks for Pratt. At the very least they can clear some cap space. The Bengals have a lot to figure out on defense in 2025, but moving away from Pratt seems like an easy decision.

The Reds Have Injuries & Worries…Already?

The guys are just now reporting to camp and we already are hearing some unfortunate news from players that the Cincinnati Reds will rely on throughout 2025. Injuries…the bane of our existence, but seemingly our reality year after year. Who is injured now? Is it enough to worry about their availability to begin the year? Subscribe to our newsletter below or using the pop-up if you haven’t already, we’ll make sure you’re informed & updated!

Rhett Lowder – Shoulder Fatigue/Elbow Soreness

Rhett Lowder is the first of a few that we know showed up with a few hiccups. In an article from Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, he told them that, ‘it’s nothing crazy, I’m just a little bit delayed to start spring,’ the injury appears to of stemmed from bullpens over the offseason. Rhett has not had any arm or shoulder issues in his career, so this is definitely a first.

    Rhett Lowder
    Rhett Lowder

He (Rhett) stated that he is feeling fine, and it was more precautionary to treat it as serious as they have so far. He is expected to begin throwing again shortly and get on a ‘build up’ program to potentially be ready for Opening Day. In his own words, “I just wasn’t recovering well from bullpen sessions, I feel good now.” To add to his sincerity of being A-OK, his MRI revealed no structural damage, or anything to worry about.

    Spencer Steer – Shoulder

Spencer Steer is still trying to catch up from his shoulder injury that bothered him late-2024 but he played through. Nick Krall made a comment that he would potentially only be DHing through early spring while he continued to build back up. The Reds posted videos of him taking ground balls, so one could assume he won’t be too far behind.

Spencer had, in his own terms, a “disappointing” season, though in many terms and through many other’s eyes it was not a disappointing season. Though he doesn’t have a defined position in the field just yet, one could assume he’ll play some pivotal baseball for the Cincinnati Reds in 2025 in a bounceback year offensively.

Brandon Williamson/Julian Aguiar – Tommy John

Unfortunately, the bird dog and one of our biggest depth pieces, Brandon Williamson, will likely miss all of 2025 with Tommy John surgery. There is a very slim chance that he can rehab quick enough to get back super late, but it is highly unlikely. He didn’t receive his surgery until November.

Julian Aguiar will be joining him in the unfortunate event of Tommy John surgery and recovery. He, like Brandon, will also miss all of 2025. He received his Tommy John surgery on October 12th and is expected to make a full recovery. Julian is one of the first Reds to be repaired by Dr. Meister.

    The Good News…

The good news? Terry Francona is the manager. More good news…? TJ Friedl, Matt McLain, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand are all in camp, healthy, and ready to go. McLain’s presence alone makes you feel comfortable that the Reds can win 5 or 6 more games this year. CES is in great shape and looking good. Jeimer Candelario is in great shape and ready to go after he scared us in the DoWL be hyperextending his leg. The Reds are finally healthy…for now. Don’t hold your breath!

    Cincinnati Reds Sign FA Reliever

    0
    New Cincinnati Red Scott Barlow

The Reds, pending physical, of course, have signed another reliever, likely taking them out of the running to resign Buck Farmer. They’ve signed a former Cleveland Guardian, and a guy they sought heavily at the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline. If you haven’t already, subscribe to our newsletter and we’ll send you any updates you may of missed with the Reds, Bengals, & More!

    Middle Relief Man…Acquired.

The Reds today, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago, agreed with RHP Scott Barlow on a $2,500,000 contract. The team has yet to announce, but this is all but said and done. Barlow was recently employed by the Cleveland Guardians after being traded to the Padres, who outbid the Cincinnati Reds in 2023’s deadline, by the Royals.

The deal is said to be a 1 year deal, no incentive bonuses on initial report. As mentioned before, this will take the Reds out of the Buck Farmer dreams, one could imagine, but Barlow will provide some stability in the bullpen with some experience.

    Barlow’s Arsenal

Scott Barlow produced a ton of weak contact in 2024, so it’s a blessing to be able to get him signed in Cincinnati. He was in the upper 80th or above percentile in a TON of categories, which could earn him nods of relief in hold situations, and not necessarily middle relief. He relies on his offspeed more than his fastball, throwing his curve 21% of the time in 2024, and his slider 45% of the time, and his fastball was used 20%, sinker used 13%. He sits in the low 90s with both his fastball and sinker.

The Guardians Ask From The Reds For Lane Thomas

    Lane Thomas’ 2024

If you follow baseball, you know Lane Thomas wasn’t near worthy of any top 100 prospects, especially due to his contract situation. He was extremely mid in ’24 posting a small 0.3 bWAR in whole, and only tallying 112 hits in 472 ABs. Defensively, yikes…-9 Outs Above Average, landing him near the bottom of the spectrum for CFs, and he was even worse in RF for the Nationals before being traded. This is what brings us to the laughable conclusion of what the Guards were asking for. Cmon, man!

Not only was Thomas relatively mid, he’s owed $7,825,000 after settling in arbitration, and is a UFA in ’26. So the Guardians not only wanted a TOP prospect back, they also didn’t want to cover a dollar on the total amount of $ owed to Thomas. Easy to see, now, why the Reds laughed and hung the phone up.

    Who did they ask for?

Per the source being cited in this, the Guardians wanted one of three from this pool of players: Cam Collier, Sal Stewart, OR Chase Petty. All three of these guys are top 100 prospects or frail top 100ers. The source did mention that the Guardians only wanted one, but still, laughable, given Lane Thomas’s production in 2024.

One could infer that the Cincinnati Reds Pres of Ops Nick Krall simply stayed professional, but hung the phone up. It was unclear if this was discussed at winter meetings or over the phone post Dallas trip, but it was very real. The Guardians wanted a top 100 prosect for Lane Thomas’ mid profile and .709 OPS. They did trade 3 players for him, so perhaps they’re trying to supplement some value back into their system by trying to take advantage of a desperate Cincinnati team. Not so fast, Christopher…

    Collier, Stewart, Petty…Available?

I’m told that these 3 have been THE most popular asks from every team that has decided to talk and do business with the Reds. The Reds have simply told everyone NO. They would only move one of these three if it were intensely beneficial to the Reds monetarily. To put things into perspective, the Reds are reluctant to include Petty in a deal for Luis Robert Jr due to his monetary dues. They would only move him if a lot of $ came with him. Safe to say none of these 3 will be moved anytime soon, unless a team is ready to work further.

If you read this article, you’d see that they were also reluctant to trade Petty for another ‘available’ asset from Los Angeles. That can tell you the Reds are real serious about Chase Petty… or maybe that they’re broke. Maybe both.
