Reds vs Cardinals – August 12th, 2024
After striking out in his first at bat, Steer capitalized on his 2nd time at lead off for the 2024 season & homered in consecutive at bats and drove in five runs on the night. Elly De La Cruz hit his team-leading 21st homerun putting the Cardinals to bed on Monday night.Â
Spencer Steer delivered a standout performance with back-to-back home runs and five RBIs, while Elly De La Cruz slugged his team-leading 21st homer, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night, all backed by a nice outing from the southpaw Andrew Abbott.
Andrew Abbott (10-9) rebounded from a recent slump, allowing just one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings to end his three-game losing streak. This marked a significant improvement for the left-hander, who had previously surrendered 12 earned runs in his last 13 1/3 innings.
Cardinals’ starter Sonny Gray (11-7) struck out nine over five innings but has yet to grab a win in three career starts against his former team. He conceded six runs on five hits, including three home runs.
Abbott deftly maneuvered through bases-loaded situations in both the second and third innings, ultimately striking out six and retiring 11 consecutive batters during one stretch.
In the third inning, Steer and De La Cruz homered on consecutive pitches from Gray, propelling Cincinnati to a 3-1 lead. This was the fifth instance this season of the Reds achieving back-to-back homers.
Steer, batting leadoff for only the third time this year and the fifth time in his career, added a three-run blast in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-1. This was Steer’s first career multi-homer game, bringing his season total to 18 home runs.
Cardinals’ manager Oliver Marmol was ejected in the fifth inning by plate umpire Stu Scheurwater following a dispute over a called ball. This ejection marks Marmol’s fourth of the season and the 13th of his managerial career.
