The lot of us can agree: The Cincinnati Reds 2024 MLB Trade Deadline was about as puzzling, aggravating, and *enter negative adjective here* as there could’ve been. We didn’t get better for 2024, and we…didn’t get better for 2025 either. Today we learned some pretty interesting stuff, thanks to the ‘ole X application and a Miami Marlins Beat Reporter, Craig Mish.
The Big Fish
There wasn’t a whole lot of ‘big fish’ moving this trade deadline, but that sure as heck didn’t mean the Cincinnati Reds didn’t try to land one. According to Craig Mish, the Reds were in on one of the Miami Marlins biggest trade assets – LHP SP Trevor Rogers. The market for starting pitching wasn’t near as hot as it was in years prior, with most teams starting to realize they had to capitalize on in-house development of arms, considering the way the market has gone, but the Marlins ended up getting a pretty significant package for theirs. The Baltimore Orioles ponied up & paid the Marlins INF Connor Norby (O’s #5 prospect) and OF Kyle Stowers (former top O’s prospect, graduated).
How Did The Reds Miss Out?
According to Craig Mish, the Cincinnati Reds offered ‘one of their top pitching prospects’ – whom, however, was not named. One would assume it would’ve had to of been RHP Chase Petty, though, of course, that’s nothing but an assumption. Considering the capital the Marlins got back, that assumption fits quite well, as Chase Petty is also the Reds’ 5th overall prospect. A very trustworthy source I speak with had mentioned the Reds have attempted to land several Marlins pitchers dating all the way back to last offseason, but the Marlins have stayed consistent with their reluctance to deal them up until now.
It’s cited numerous places & confirmed through that same source cited above that the ole Redlegs reached out to Miami in the Winter as well in regards to Trevor Rogers (And, raise you one better, several other of their starters) – but they (Reds) were unwilling to depart with more than just Chase Petty and what’s explained as ‘a lower level international prospect’ for Trevor Rogers both times. The Marlins decided they wanted Norby and Stowers more, and I believe that is a smart choice.
Four of the top five of Miami’s prospects are pitchers now after the acquistion from the Padres. They do not have a shortage of arms, so leading with Chase Petty (assumedly) makes sense why the Reds were not winners this go around on the bidding. It was a bad time to attempt to buy, several of our top bats are injured (Arroyo, Stewart) but I applaud Krall’s team for trying.
