The Cincinnati Reds officially began an important phase of their offseason Thursday, October 29, when three players entered free agency.
According to Major League Baseball’s official transaction report, catcher Tyler Stephenson, starting pitcher Brady Singer and left-handed reliever Brock Burke all elected free agency.
The moves create several important questions for Cincinnati as the organization begins preparing for the 2027 season.

Tyler Stephenson Enters Free Agency
Stephenson’s entry into free agency leaves Cincinnati facing an important decision at catcher.
The former first-round pick has spent his entire Major League career with the Reds.
Although Stephenson is now a free agent, Cincinnati could still pursue a new contract with him.
The Reds also have one of baseball’s most highly regarded catching prospects in Alfredo Duno.
According to MLB Pipeline, Duno ranks as Cincinnati’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 20 prospect in baseball.
He batted .281 with 19 home runs, 61 RBI and a .899 OPS across 97 Minor League games in 2026.
However, Duno is not expected to be ready for Opening Day 2027.
That leaves Cincinnati evaluating whether to pursue a reunion with Stephenson or find another option while Duno continues developing.
Brady Singer Becomes a Free Agent
Starting pitcher Brady Singer also entered free agency Thursday.
His departure from the roster creates another question for a Cincinnati pitching staff that struggled throughout the 2026 season.
The Reds must determine whether Singer fits into their future plans or whether their resources would be better spent elsewhere.
Cincinnati also faces uncertainty surrounding its starting rotation following injuries to important pitchers.
Brock Burke Enters the Free-Agent Market
Left-handed reliever Brock Burke was the third Cincinnati player to elect free agency on October 29.
Burke’s availability creates another decision for a bullpen that needs reliable late-inning options.
The Reds could attempt to re-sign him, but he is now eligible to explore opportunities elsewhere.
Hunter Greene Also Appears on Reds Transaction Report
Thursday’s transaction report also included the activation of Hunter Greene and Blake Dunn from the 60-day injured list.
These offseason roster transactions should not be interpreted as confirmation that either player has been medically cleared for game action.
The Reds will continue evaluating their health and availability as the offseason progresses.
What Should Cincinnati Prioritize?
The Reds finished the 2026 season with a 75-87 record.
With significant needs throughout the roster, Cincinnati must decide how to allocate its available resources.
Re-signing familiar players could provide continuity.
However, the organization also needs improvements if it hopes to compete with the strongest teams in the National League Central.
Stephenson, Singer and Burke are now free agents, but their futures remain undecided.
The question for Cincinnati is whether bringing them back represents the best path toward improving in 2027.
