Ian Gibaut Outrighted – What Does This Mean?
First things first, if you don’t know what it means to be outrighted, it means that the player is taken off the team’s 40 man roster and sent to the minor leagues. First, to get to the minor leagues, no other team must claim him. That did not happen when it comes to Ian Gibaut.
Ian Gibaut pitched in 25 games in 2025 before hitting the IL with a shoulder impingement that ultimately kept him sidelined the majority of the season. He had a 4.62 ERA in 25.1 IP and a 4.44 FIP which wasn’t anything to write home about, hence being outrighted on top of the injuries.
Cincinnati Reds Bullpen Plans 2026
It’s safe to say clearing up a 40 man spot by using one of your veteran relievers in an outright assignment signals that the Reds acknowledge they’re going to have to get to work in free agency for the bullpen. Ian Gibaut wasn’t an All Star by any means, but his production was quite nice, especially in 2023 where he had a 3.33 ERA in 75.2 innings pitched. He hasn’t been able to match that quality ever since the injury bug has been stinging him, however, and if the Reds want to be competitive in 2026, they’ll have to look elsewhere for now.
