The Reds have added another veteran presence, per Jeff Passan. They’re signing the former 1B of the Boston Red Sox, 1B Dominic Smith. That deal is pending physical, says Passan.
Dominic Smith in 2024…
Dom was said to be ‘beloved’ by the Boston Red Sox, but they just recently had to make a big decision of cutting him loose due to Triston Casas coming off the Injured List. Dominic Smith has played a good defensive 1B thus far and has gotten on base at a reasonable clip. Everyone’s favorite stat is the “expected HR” – Dom has 6 HRs on 2024’s season thus far, had he played in Great American Ballpark, he’d have 9.
This signing likely signals the end of Jeimer Candelario’s 2024 entirely – the Reds needed to fill a position, and what better way than to add another veteran presence. Ty France will likely get some play elsewhere in the infield going forward. There’s also questions about Jake Fraley’s injury, and the potential for Will Benson to be sent to AAA. Roster move hasn’t been announced, as deal is pending physical.
