Spencer Steer Qualified For Gold Glove at 1B
Spencer Steer had a mediocre season at the plate but ended up hot as can be. What did show up all throughout the season? His defense. He used his natural infield abilities to transfer over to first base and become a force to be reckoned with. The Cincinnati Reds have been looking to upgrade defensively and Steer helped in that category.

Gold Glove 1B Competition
Steer will have some stark competition, as there were several other first basement in the National League that were on par with him defensively, or in some cases, even better. As we know, Little Cincinnati rarely gets love in the media, and that’s what it takes to lock in one of these awards. If you use Statcast’s OAA as method to finding who will win, the voting will go as this:
- Matt Olson – Atlanta Braves – 9 OAA
- Wilson Contreras – St. Louis Cardinals – 6 OAA
- Spencer Steer – Cincinnati Reds – 6 OAA
Matt and Spencer had a lot of similar defensive track, but Matt will end up with the reward. He played in all 162 games, his 4th straight year doing so. Spencer had a great year defensively, maybe next year he will win! We’ll keep our fingers crossed!
